Using Bless Me, Ultima, consider the symbolic meanings of the church and Rosie's. How do they differ? How do they compare/connect? Explain your answers using integrated quotes.
Seth J. ******** In Bless me, Ultima the church represents purity and god to some but somtimes it only represents "How can god let this happen to a kid. I never asked to be born.". (Anaya 206) These questions asked by Antonio's friend where exactly "the same questions" that Antonio wanted answered. In Bless me, Ultima Rosie's place is considered a temptation from the devil and fall into one of the seven deadly sins and be forced to spend a "long eternity" in hell. They almost seem to be opposites due to the fact that church does not support brothels but however rosie's doesnt necessarily hate church. So they arent complete opposites which means that perhaps they have some points of similarity. Despite lust being a deadly sin that doesnt mean that the people at rosie's are demons or possessed because they dont support murder or theft.
Well obviously the church represented the Christan/catholic faith. It is a proposal to God, where people go to replenish their souls and become fresh. Rosie's house has a tragic meaning behind it, known as the whore house this place is where " Andrew [loses] his innocence"( Anaya156). This house in literary on the edge of a cliff that leads straight down which symbolically represents Hell. The contrast by there way of how they are placed on the day of judgement. The fight between good and evil, where how these two totally different pairs are are symbolically similar.
Well the church is to me, totally the opposite of Rosie's. The church represents the Christian/Catholic faith and Rosie's represents the opposite which is the demon and demonic things. The church is more bright and looks like a happy place and is located on the "top of the cliff" and Rosie's is located at the edge of the cliff almost near the edge which represents how it is about to fall and go down towards hell (Anaya 261). This shows that Rosie's has an evil touch to it and the church is completely different. To me, they don’t really connect to each other because they are so different but they both represent very strong symbols in the novel.
Riquerra Broadnax Period 5 The church is a symblo of peace and tranquility but also an area with unclear intintion, "A thin mist [...] hid the church tower". Rosie's place is a symbol of great temtation, "Come in Andrew", a garden of eden in a way with the Rosie girls as eve, (Anayas 166).
The church symbolizes peacfulness and calmness and a place where people like Antonio seek answers to why God make the decions that he make. Rosie place symbolizes a place where there is a greaat amoount of temptation to do wrong deeds. They are differnet because is to go to become a better person while the other place is to give to the evil temptation. The church and Rosie's place is alike because they bith represent the main areas for good and evil.
By the one known as... Matthew Francis Period 5 The church is a polar opposite of Rosie's. The church is characterized as tall and made of granite. While Rosie's is on "top of a cliff" that drags men to hell. Rosie's is also made of stucco which is weak and brittle like the faith of all who enter that place. These symbolic pair represent the good and evil in every person's life.
